Common Dryer Vent Problems We Repair

Disconnected vents in walls, ceilings, attics, or crawl spaces

Vents can come apart at joints inside walls, ceilings, attics, or crawl spaces. When this happens, hot air and lint blow directly into your home instead of outside. The dryer may still run fine, but the moisture from your clothes isn’t venting outside — and over time, this can cause mold problems in your walls or ceiling.

Per the International Residential Code, dryer vent sections must be fastened with screws and sealed with approved tape. But home builders rarely follow this standard — most just tape the sections together without fasteners. It’s very common for these connections to come apart during normal operation or even during cleaning

Rusted and Rotted Steel Vent Sections

When a dryer vent is clogged or restricted, the dryer can’t blow the water vapor out of the house. Instead, moisture from your clothes sits in the duct — and over time, it rusts the steel. Galvanized steel is rust-resistant, not rust-proof. If water and wet lint sit in the duct long enough, the metal will eventually rot through.

Water-Soaked Vent Insulation in Attics and Crawl Spaces

When condensation collects inside the dryer vent, it leaks through any seams that aren’t properly sealed. Most dryer vents in uninsulated spaces — like attics and crawl spaces — are wrapped in insulation jackets. This insulation absorbs water, which leads to rusting and rotting of the duct over time. If the vent runs through an attic, the water can also leak onto ceilings and cause visible damage below.

Crushed or Collapsed Rigid Duct

We commonly see sections of dryer vent crushed where the builder tried to jam it into a space smaller than the required 4-inch diameter. It’s also not uncommon to find crushed ductwork in attics where someone stepped on the vent. If the duct runs to the roof and isn’t properly supported, the entire run can collapse under its own weight.

Leaking Joints Blowing Lint into the Home

Because builders and homeowners rarely construct dryer vents to be airtight, it’s common to find lint escaping from joints — collecting in attics, crawl spaces, or inside walls. This can affect indoor air quality and is a sign that the vent connections need to be properly fastened and sealed.

Non Code-Compliant Materials Concealed Behind Construction

Building codes prohibit anything other than rigid metal duct — with a specific minimum thickness — from being concealed behind construction. This includes walls, ceilings, attics, and crawl spaces. Flexible duct (foil or vinyl) and semi-rigid aluminum are not allowed in these areas. If your vent was built with the wrong materials, we replace the dryer duct with code-compliant rigid steel.

Improperly Sized or Poorly Routed Vents

Building codes require dryer vents to be 4 inches in diameter, with limits on total length and number of turns. Vents that are undersized, too long, or have too many bends restrict airflow — causing longer dry times and overheating. We assess the layout and recommend improvements where possible, including re-routing the vent if needed.

Failed Home Inspections or Code Violations

We perform many dryer vent repairs for homeowners trying to sell their home. When a dryer vent issue is flagged on a home inspection, you need it fixed fast and right so the transaction can close. We repair all code violations and home inspection issues.

How We Repair Dryer Vents

Every repair is done with code-compliant materials — rigid steel duct, properly fastened and sealed joints, and secure supports per the International Residential Code.

We start by locating the problem — whether it’s inside a wall or ceiling, in the attic, or in a crawl space. We evaluate the overall vent for efficiency, code compliance, and damage. Once we’ve fully assessed the system, we make recommendations for repairs, replacements, modifications, or re-routing based on your needs and the cost of each option.

If the vent layout is causing problems — too long, too many turns, or poorly routed — we’ll discuss options for improving airflow.

Once the repair is complete, we clean any remaining sections of the vent and test the system for adequate airflow and leaks.
