A Broken Vent Cover Invites Pests, Moisture, and Blockages

The exterior dryer exhaust cover is the final piece of your dryer vent system—and it takes a beating. Sun, rain, ice, and wind wear it down over time. Flappers get stuck. Screens clog with lint. Covers crack, fall off, or get damaged by lawn equipment.

When the vent cover fails, your dryer exhaust has nowhere to go. Worse, you’re leaving an open hole into your home for birds, rodents, insects, and moisture.

We repair and replace dryer exhaust terminations in Frederick, MD and throughout Frederick and Montgomery Counties—wall vents, roof vents, and everything in between. Same-day service is often available.

What Is a Dryer Exhaust Termination?

The dryer exhaust termination—commonly called a vent cover, vent hood, or exhaust cap—is the exterior endpoint of your dryer vent system. It’s where hot, moist, lint-laden air exits your home.

A properly functioning termination does three things:

  1. Allows exhaust air to flow freely out of your home
  2. Prevents backdrafts from pushing air back into the vent
  3. Keeps pests, debris, and weather out when the dryer isn’t running

When any of these functions fail, problems follow—reduced airflow, pest intrusions, moisture damage, or a dryer that won’t dry.

Signs Your Dryer Exhaust Needs Repair

Dryer Taking Too Long to Dry

A restricted or blocked exhaust termination creates backpressure throughout the entire vent system. Your dryer works harder, runs hotter, and takes multiple cycles to dry a single load.

Lint Buildup Around the Exterior Vent Cover

Lint collecting on or around the vent cover means exhaust air isn’t flowing freely. As lint builds up, it can also jam the vent flap itself, preventing it from opening properly when the dryer runs.

Roof vents are especially prone to this problem. The clearances are tight, flaps jam easily, and they can only be cleaned properly by hand from the roof.

Some covers include built-in bird guards, but when the openings are too small, they clog quickly and restrict airflow. In certain cases, these guards need to be modified or removed to restore proper exhaust flow.

We install quality vent covers with properly designed bird guards that keep pests out without trapping lint, ensuring safe, unrestricted airflow.

Exhaust Flap Won't Open or Close

The dryer vent exhaust flap should swing open when the dryer runs and close when it stops. If it’s stuck open, you’re inviting pests and cold air into your vent system. If it’s stuck closed or partially blocked, your dryer can’t exhaust properly—leading to longer dry times and overheating.

Flappers fail for several reasons: lint jams the flap, hinges corrode or break, or spring-loaded covers lose tension and get stuck. If a flapper won’t open when the dryer runs, it could also indicate a deeper issue—like a completely clogged vent or a disconnection somewhere in the line, often where the duct connects the to the outside cover.

Visible Damage to the Vent Cover

Cracked plastic, bent metal, missing flappers, or a cover that’s pulled away from the wall or roof are all signs it’s time for a replacement.

Birds or Rodents Have Gotten Into the Vent

If you hear scratching or chirping in your walls, or you’ve seen birds entering the vent, the cover has likely failed. We remove nests and debris, then install a pest-resistant replacement.

Backdraft into the Dryer

When the exhaust flapper doesn’t seal properly or is stuck open, outside air flows back into the vent and dryer. In the summer, this brings humidity that condenses inside the drum and lint trap. In the winter, your clothes feel cold when you pull them out—even right after a cycle.

You Can Feel Cold Air Coming From the Dryer

When the dryer isn’t running, you shouldn’t feel a draft. If cold air is coming through, the flapper isn’t sealing—or the cover is damaged or missing entirely.

Common Causes of Exhaust Termination Damage

Weather and Age

Exterior vent covers are exposed to everything—sun, rain, snow, ice, and temperature swings. Plastic covers become brittle and crack. Metal covers rust. Flappers warp or corrode. Most covers need replacement every 5-10 years, sometimes sooner.

Pest Damage

Birds are persistent. If they want to nest in your vent, they’ll peck at the cover, push past flappers, and stuff the opening with nesting material. Rodents chew through plastic to get inside.

Lawn Equipment and Impact Damage

Wall vents close to the ground get hit by mowers, trimmers, and debris. One impact can crack a cover or knock it loose.

Lint Clogging the Screen

Although this is technically a building code violation, builders and other companies install Some vent covers have screens or mesh designed to keep pests out. These screens catch lint over time and eventually restrict airflow. If not cleaned, the buildup causes the dryer to overheat.

Improper Installation

Vent covers installed without proper sealing can let water behind the siding. We often find covers held on with caulk alone—no screws, no secure connection to the vent itself. Covers that aren’t attached properly can pull loose or disconnect from the ductwork over time. Overtightening is also a problem—it can twist the cover and cause the flap to bind.
