Dryer Won't Start in Frederick, MD
Fast, Accurate Dryer Diagnosis — Fixed Right the First Visit
You press the dryer start button and… nothing. No hum. No tumble. Just silence.
A dryer that won’t start is frustrating because there’s no obvious clue about what’s wrong. But most of the time, it’s something simple — a blown thermal fuse, a bad door switch, or a broken belt. The problem isn’t the fix. It’s knowing where to look.
We’ve been diagnosing dead dryers in Frederick and the surrounding area since 2017, and we know exactly where to look. Most problems are identified and repaired in a single visit. And because we also clean dryer vents, we can tell you whether a clogged vent caused the failure in the first place — something most appliance repair companies overlook.

Why Most "Dryer Won't Start" Repairs Don't Last
When your dryer won’t start, the most common cause is a blown thermal fuse — and that fuse usually blows because of a clogged vent.
Here’s the problem: Most appliance repair companies will replace the fuse and leave. They don’t touch the vent. So the vent stays clogged, the dryer overheats again, and you’re back to square one — paying for another repair or worse, a new dryer.
We fix the dryer AND clean the vent in the same visit.
Because we specialize in both dryer repair and dryer vent cleaning, we can diagnose whether your thermal fuse blew due to a vent problem — and actually fix the root cause. One visit. One bill. A repair that lasts.
Common Reasons Your Dryer Won't Start
When a dryer stops making heat but still runs, there are really only a handful of things that could be wrong. Here’s what we check:
Blown Thermal Fuse (Most Common)
The thermal fuse is a safety device that cuts power to the motor if the dryer overheats excessively. When it blows, your dryer won’t start at all. The most common reason thermal fuses blow is restricted airflow from a clogged dryer vent. We test the fuse and inspect/clean the dryer vent to make sure the replacement doesn’t fail again in a few months.
No Power to the Dryer
If the breaker trips, the dryer will have no power and won’t start. This is obvious if your dryer has a digital display — it won’t light up. If your dryer doesn’t have a display, open the door and check whether the drum light comes on. Either way, it’s worth checking the breaker before assuming something inside the dryer has failed.
Faulty Door Switch
The door switch tells the dryer it’s safe to run because the door is shut. If the switch is broken or the door isn’t latching fully, the dryer won’t start. You might notice the drum light stays on when the door is closed, or you don’t hear a click when it shuts. This is a straightforward fix.
Failed Start Switch
If you press the start button and get no response at all, the start switch itself may have failed. This is the physical button or dial on your control panel that initiates the cycle.
Broken Drive Belt (Belt Switch)
Some dryers have a belt switch that prevents the motor from running if the belt is broken.
Obstructed Blower Wheel
Small items like a sock or undergarment — can get stuck in the blower wheel if it slips past the lint filter. You might hear the motor straining without starting. We clear the obstruction and check for damage.
Defective Motor or Motor Relay
The motor turns the drum and the blower. If it’s overheated, seized, or burned out, the dryer won’t start. Also, a stuck motor start relay can prevent it from starting.
Control Board or Timer Failure
If everything else checks out, the issue may be the main control board or timer. This is much less common, and we only recommend board replacement after ruling out simpler causes. It’s also the most expensive repair — and depending on the age of your dryer, it may not be worth it. We’ll give you an honest opinion.
Why Proper Diagnosis Matters
A dryer that won’t start can have several causes — and some are related. The most common cause, a blown thermal fuse might be the immediate problem, but a clogged vent is often the reason it blew in the first place.
We check for both. Because we handle dryer repair and vent cleaning, we can trace the problem to its source — not just swap a part and hope for the best.
