Dryer Making Noise Repair in Frederick, MD

Squeaking, Grinding & Rumbling Noises Diagnosed and Fixed

When your dryer starts making loud or unusual noises, it’s hard to ignore — and it’s easy to worry that something serious is failing or that you’re headed toward an expensive replacement.

The good news is that most dryer noise problems are caused by worn or dirty components that are relatively simple to fix when caught early.

We diagnose the source of the noise, repair the worn parts, and fully clean the dryer internally while it’s disassembled — removing lint buildup that can cause noise, reduce performance, and increase fire risk. The result? A quiet dryer, peace of mind, and no surprise trip to the appliance store.

What’s That Sound? Common Dryer Noises Explained

Different dryer noises point to different problems. Here’s how to tell what your dryer is trying to tell you.

Squeaking or Squealing Noise

High-pitched squeaks or squeals usually mean parts are rubbing or wearing out.

Bad idler pulley

The most common cause of a squeaking or squealing noise is the idler pulley — a small, spring-loaded wheel that keeps the belt tight. Over time, it can get dirty, seize up, or break.

Bad Bearings

Bearings typically fail slowly over time. Sometimes they make squeaky or screeching type noises. Sometimes they can make grinding or rumbling noises.

Drum Bearing

These are very common in GE dryers. They can make various types of noises when they go bad, depending on the cause. They typically start going bad with a squeak and when they finally break, you will hear banging and rumbling and get a lot of vibration.

Motor Bearing

Dryer motors typically last a very long time. One way they can start to fail is a bad bearing. If the bearing is going bad, you will start to hear noises and it will get worse over time. The noise type you hear depends on how the bearing is failing.

Plastic Scraping Noise

When something is rubbing against plastic, it tends to make an abrasive, scraping type sound. This usually happens when the metal drum is rubbing on a plastic part. This is a very common sound on GE dryers.

Drum Slides

Drum slides are very common in GE dryers. They are plastic inserts that act as a wearable surface between the top of the rotating drum and the plastic drum support assembly. They can either wear out completely or can get ripped from their position by the drum. In either case, the drum starts rubbing on the plastic.

Felt Assembly

Felt assemblies are common in GE dryers. A felt strip sits between the rotating drum and the plastic support assembly, reducing friction and allowing smooth rotation. Over time, the felt can wear through or get pulled out of position by the drum. Either way, the drum starts rubbing directly on plastic.

Grinding Noise (Metal to Metal)

Grinding noises are more serious and shouldn’t be ignored. This noise usually means the rotating metal drum is rubbing against another metal component in the dryer. Do not use the dryer if you hear this. Metal can cut right through other metal. If  you allow this to continue, it may not be possible to repair the dryer.

Thumping Noise

Some thumping could be related to uneven loads or an un-balanced dryer. Persistent, rhythmic thumping is often caused by worn drum rollers.

Flat Spots on Drum Rollers

Drum rollers are plastic/rubber wheels that the supports the bottom of the drum. If the roller develops a flat surface, you will hear a rhythmic thumping, similar to a flat tire on a car.

Banging Noise

Banging results when broken pieces can move and slam into each other.

Broken Drum Rollers

Drum rollers are plastic/rubber wheels that the supports the bottom of the drum. Sometimes the bushing breaks off of the wheel. This results in the drum roller shaft bouncing around and loud, banging noises. This is a common problem with Samsung dryers.

Broken Drum Bearing

When a drum bearing’s bushing breaks, similar to the drum roller failure, the shaft will bounce around and cause a loud banging noise.

Rattling Noise

Blower Housing misaligned

Some dryer have a blower housing that is flimsy and can be moved in a way that the blower wheel will actually contact the housing and make a rattling noise.

Coins in the Drum Baffles

Coins left in pockets will often find their way into the clothes dryer agitators (baffles). If you turn the drum by hand you will hear them move around.

Why a Noisy Dryer Usually Doesn't Need Replacing

A noisy dryer often sounds worse than it actually is.

In most cases, noise is caused by normal wear on moving parts — not a failing dryer. Replacing worn rollers, pulleys, belts, or bearings early can prevent bigger problems and extend the life of your dryer significantly.

Catching these issues now often saves you from having to replace the dryer later.

Our Approach to Noisy Dryer Repair

When we repair a noisy dryer, we don’t just swap one part and button it back up.

Because noise repairs require partial or full disassembly, we:

  • Inspect all moving components, not just the noisy one.
  • Replace worn parts as a set when appropriate
  • Deep-clean the dryer internally while it’s open

Internal lint buildup is common, even in dryers with clean vents. Removing it:

  • Reduces fire risk
  • Improves airflow and efficiency
  • Prevents future noise and overheating issues

Most appliance repair companies don’t clean inside the dryer at all. We do — every time it’s opened.

When to Stop Using a Noisy Dryer

Most dryer noises are from parts that can be replaced cheaply. Letting the noise persist, in most cases, won’t cause permanent damage. One exception to that is metal to metal grinding. If you hear this, something is very wrong. Don’t run the dryer.

Keep in mind that small repairs can turn into big ones. One misaligned or broken part, can cause rattling or vibration and in turn cause another part to break. It is generally safe to keep using the dryer for a while, but you should get it repaired. If you have any question about what might be wrong, call us.

Stop using the dryer if:

  • You hear grinding or metal-on-metal sounds
  • You smell burning
  • The noise gets rapidly louder
  • The dryer shuts off after making noise
