Dryer Turns On But Won't Spin in Ellicott City, MD

Fast, Accurate Dryer Diagnosis — Fixed Right the First Visit

You press start and hear the motor running — but the drum just sits there. The dryer has power, it’s trying to work, but nothing’s tumbling.

That’s when most people start worrying: Is the dryer ruined? Do I need a new one? Is this going to be an expensive repair?

The good news is that when the motor runs but the drum doesn’t spin, the problem is usually straightforward. In most cases, it’s a broken belt, or a piece of clothing jammed in the blower — repairs that are far less expensive than replacing the dryer.

We diagnose the issue, replace the worn parts, and clean the dryer internally while it’s apart — so it runs smoothly and safely again.

If nothing happens at all when you press Start — no sound, no hum, no response — that’s a different issue. See our dryer won’t start page.

Why Your Dryer Drum Isn't Spinning

When the motor runs but the drum doesn’t turn, something in the drive system has failed. Here’s what we typically find:

Jammed Blower

It’s not uncommon for small items — like socks, baby clothing, or undergarments — to slip past the lint trap and become lodged in the blower wheel. When this happens, the blower can jam and prevent the drum from turning properly.

You may hear the motor running, humming, or straining while the drum doesn’t move. Clearing the obstruction and inspecting the blower usually restores normal operation.

Broken or Slipping Drive Belt

The drive belt wraps around the drum and connects it to the motor, allowing the drum to spin. Over time, the belt can wear, crack, stretch, or come off its track.

In many modern dryers, a broken belt triggers a belt switch that cuts power to the motor entirely. In those cases, the dryer won’t run at all (assuming the switch works). However, if the belt is damaged, loose, or has slipped rather than snapped completely, the motor may still run while the drum doesn’t move.

Drive belt issues are among the most common causes of a non-spinning drum — and they’re typically straightforward to repair.

Motor Failure

If the motor itself has failed, you may hear a hum when you press start, but nothing happens. Or you may hear nothing at all. Motors can fail from age, overheating, or strain from worn support components.

Failed Start Switch

If you press the start button and get no response at all, the start switch itself may have failed. This is the physical button or dial on your control panel that initiates the cycle.

Idler Pulley

The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt. If it seizes or breaks, the belt goes slack and can’t turn the drum. A failed idler pulley often makes a loud squealing or thumping noise before it fails completely.

How We Fix It

We diagnose the problem, replace the worn or broken parts, and get your dryer spinning again — usually the same day.

When we disassemble the dryer for repair, we also clean out any lint buildup around the heater, motor, lint trap and blower. This improves performance and eliminates fire risk from lint buildup around the heater.

Why Choose Us?

We’re the only company in the area that repairs dryers and cleans vents — and we’ve been doing both since 2017. That combination matters, because most dryer problems start in the vent.

We’ve worked in homes in Ellicott City and in homes across Howard and Carroll Counties — old homes, new construction, everything in between. We know the common issues: builder shortcuts, code violations, vents routed through crawl spaces, up three stories and on roofs. We’ve seen it all and fixed it all.

Unlike general appliance repair companies or jack-of-all-trades handymen, dryers and dryer vents are all we do. No carpets, no HVAC ducts, no refrigerators. Just dryers — and the vents connected to them. That focus makes us faster, more accurate, and better equipped to solve your problem the first time.

Every repair is guaranteed. We also offer discounts for seniors and veterans.
