Why "Dryer Not Heating" Repairs Often Fail

When a dryer stops heating, the failed part is usually a symptom, not the root problem.

If the vent is clogged, the dryer can’t push air out. It overheats. The thermal fuse blows or the heating element burns out. If you fix the part without clearing the vent, and it just happens again.

That’s why we approach dryer repair differently — and why our repairs last. We fix the problem AND  the cause. when we do a dryer vent cleaning.

Common Causes We Fix

When a dryer stops making heat but still runs, there are really only a handful of things that could be wrong. Here’s what we check:

Clogged Dryer Vent (Most Common)

This is the #1 reason dryers stop heating—and it’s the one most appliance repair companies miss. When your vent is clogged with lint, airflow through the dryer is reduced. The heater is heating the air. If that air isn’t flowing well, the heater overheats. When the heater overheats, two things can happen:

Burned Out Heater Element

A heater element is basically just a wire that get hot from the electrical current flowing through it, similar to a light bulb. Just like a light bulb, the heater can burn out. It’s as simple as that.

Blown Thermal Fuse

Every dryer has a thermal fuse — a safety device that cuts power to the heater if it gets too hot. Once it blows, the dryer won’t heat until it’s replaced. The fuse usually blows because the vent is clogged and the dryer overheated.

Bad Heater Element

Sometimes a heater just breaks. It’s rare, but it happens. We can check for a short circuit and for proper element resistance.

Faulty Thermistor

A thermistor measures the temperature of the dryer and sends this information to the dryer’s logic circuit. If it reads incorrectly, the dryer will eitrher heat improperly or not heat at all. It is a fairly common issue.

Gas Dryers: Faulty Gas Igniter or Valve Solenoids

If you have a gas dryer, the igniter lights the gas to create heat. The gas valve solenoids control the flow of gas. Either of these can fail and prevent your dryer from heating. Gas dryer repairs require some specialized knowledge, and we’re equipped to handle them.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Electric dryers need 240 volts to heat properly. They’re wired to two circuit breakers. Usually these circuit breakers If one breaker trips, the dryer will run (the motor only needs 120 volts) but won’t heat. Check your electrical panel—if one of the dryer breakers is tripped, reset it and try again.

Why Choose Us?

We’re the only company in the area that repairs dryers and cleans vents — and we’ve been doing both since 2017. That combination matters, because most dryer problems start in the vent.

We’ve worked in Ellicott City homes and homes across Howard and Carroll Counties — old homes, new construction, everything in between. We know the common issues: builder shortcuts, code violations, vents routed through crawl spaces, up three stories and on roofs. We’ve seen it all and fixed it all.

Unlike general appliance repair companies or jack-of-all-trades handymen, dryers and dryer vents are all we do. No carpets, no HVAC ducts, no refrigerators. Just dryers — and the vents connected to them. That focus makes us faster, more accurate, and better equipped to solve your problem the first time.
